December 6, 2018

November and December are sparsely populated with sporting events for most universities across the country. Typically, the only active sport is men’s and women’s basketball, but that is not the case for SBU. The Bearcats’ Women’s Cross Country Team reached the National Championships after receiving an at-large bid in the selection process. Here is how they did:

Receiving one of the 10 at-large bids from the selection committee, SBU’s Women’s Cross Country team headed to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to compete in the National Championships on December 1, 2018. The Bearcats, coming off an impressive fifth-place finish at regionals, collectively finished the race in 32nd place. Tabitha Weber was the first Bearcat to cross the finish line, and she was later joined by Elysia Burgos, Amanda Berkstresser, Stephanie Penticuff, Oluwabukola Pereira, Taylor Morrow, and Hannah Gulick, who all finished the race for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats have gotten off to a sluggish start to 2018 MIAA Conference play. SBU has dropped its first two Conference games and is riding a four game losing streak overall, which brings their record to 2-6. The highlight of the season’s first eight games has been the rise of Morgan Henderson (#11 pictured above), who is leading the Bearcats in points (12.8 ppg), rebounds (8.9 rpg), and assists (3.8 apg).

The Bearcats had their three game winning streak snapped on Thursday, December 6, while visiting Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. SBU has shot out of the gate with a so-so start to the 2018-19 campaign. With an overall record of 5-4, the Bearcats are led by sophomore point guard, Chris Rossow, who has team highs in points (14 ppg), assists (5.3 apg), and steals (1.4 spg) through the first nine games of the season.
