Winning their final two regular season matches, the Bearcats entered the MIAA Conference Tournament with a 15-2 record. SBU rattled off back-to-back wins in the Tournament, which secured their second consecutive MIAA Conference Tournament win. The dominant Bearcats won their matches with a combined score of 8-1. Their season will continue on May 11, 2019, when the NCAA Regional Tournament commences. With a 17-2 overall record, the Bearcats are ranked #1 in the Central Region and ranked #11 in the country.
Like on the men’s side of things, SBU’s women’s tennis team earned victories in their final two matches of the regular season. They entered the MIAA Conference Tournament with the odds stacked against them; two of the nations top-10 teams are in the MIAA. The Bearcats faced off against Washburn University in the second round. Possessing just one loss on the season and having beat the Bearcats two weeks prior, Washburn was the heavy favorite to win. SBU stood their ground and pulled off the incredible upset in the semifinals! Their opponent for the championship match was the University of Central Oklahoma. Despite losing to the eleventh-ranked Broncos, the Bearcats’ season will continue in the NCAA Regional Tournament, which begins on May 11, 2019. The Bearcats are ranked sixth in the Central Region and possess an overall record of 13-7.
Baseball/Softball
The softball team wrapped their season up on April 26, 2019, with a win against Lincoln University. The Bearcats finish the season 8-47 overall and 4-22 in MIAA Conference play. Interestingly, all eight of the Bearcats’ wins this season, which is their final season in the MIAA Conference, came in Bolivar at Dodson Field.
The baseball team still has a few more games remaining in their final season in the MIAA. Riding a two-game winning streak, the Bearcats will spar with Rockhurst University in a double-header before ending their season with a three-game stint in Bolivar against the University of Central Oklahoma. The Bearcats’ record currently sits at 18-27 overall and 10-20 in Conference play.
Golf
The men’s and women’s golf seasons also wrapped up in the last two weeks. The men’s team, who hosted the SBU Bearcat Invitational Tournament before heading to the MIAA Conference Tournament, concluded the season with a 13th-place finish in Bolivar and a 10th-place finish in the MIAA Conference Tournament. The women’s team, who just had the MIAA Conference Tournament remaining on their schedule, competed and finished 9th overall. With both seasons in the books, the pages turn to the 2019-20 golf season for SBU.
