SBU’s football season kicked off in Liberty, Missouri, when the Bearcats battled the William Jewell Cardinals on Saturday, September 7th, 2019. The first game of the season proved to be a difficult one for the Bearcats. Midway through the third quarter, the Bearcats found themselves trailing 9-0 when William Jewell scored their second touchdown of the contest. Following the missed, and SBU-returned, PAT, the score stood at 15-2. William Jewell scored another touchdown to round out the third quarter and did not look back from there. The Bearcats fell 29-9 in their opening matchup.

The following Saturday saw the Bearcats back in action against Central State University in SBU’s first home game of the young season. This contest was equally as lopsided as the Bearcats’ first game of the season, but it had reversed the script. SBU took the lead early and never let their foot off the gas. Winning by a score of 38-3, the Bearcats are 1-1 on the year and look to build on their current momentum. Their next contest takes them on the road yet again; they will be in Owensboro, Kentucky, taking on Kentucky Wesleyan College on Saturday, September 21st.

SBU’s women’s soccer team has started the year with an impressive first three matches. Following a 0-0 tie in their first match, the Bearcats have rattled off back-to-back wins. The first win of the year came on a 5-2 drubbing of Northwest Missouri State University, and the second win came in an in-conference showdown against Drury University. SBU beat their rivals 2-1, which puts their record at 2-0-1 through their first three games. The Bearcats have four more GLVC games over the course of the next two weeks.

The men’s soccer team has not been as lucky with their early-season endeavors. Starting the season with three straight home matches, the Bearcats lost two incredibly close contests against Oklahoma Baptist University (2-3) and Southern Nazarene University (3-4). The third consecutive home game pitted the Bearcats against a familiar rival, the Drury Panthers. SBU was completely outmatched in this particular instance, losing the match 1-4. Falling to 0-3-0 on the season, the Bearcats look to get back on track with back-to-back, in-conference road matches.

The volleyball season has not started too well for the Bearcats. SBU has opened the season with a 1-7 record, including dropping their last six games. The good news for the Bearcats is that this is the toughest part of their schedule. With only one more tournament, the GAC/GLVC Crossover, before the start of GLVC play, the Bearcats still have plenty of time to turn their season around.
