The two week stretch from September 7 to September 20 yielded a low total of wins for the SBU athletic teams. Two volleyball wins, a fourth place finish for the Women’s Golf Team, a ninth place finish for the Men’s Cross Country Team, and a sixth place finish for the Women’s Cross Country Team highlighted the weeks for the Bearcats. Here is a brief rundown of everything that happened over this stretch:
Women’s Volleyball
The Women’s Volleyball Team finished 2-5 during this time, which brings their overall record to 4-12. Struggling at the start of conference play, the Bearcats ride a current four game losing streak and have quickly fallen to 0-3 in the MIAA Conference.
Men’s and Women’s Soccer
SBU’s Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams both failed to put a “W” on the board. The Men’s Team went 0-4 and was outscored 15-2 over the course of those four matches. The closest of those matches came in Liberty, Missouri, where the Bearcats fell 3-2 to William Jewell College. The Women’s Team fared slightly better; they went 0-3 and were outscored 10-2. This brings the Men’s Team’s record to 0-6 on the young season and brings the Women’s Team’s record to 0-5-1.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
The SBU Cross Country Teams ran extremely well at the MSSU Stampede on Saturday, September 15. The Men’s Team, led by senior runner Terry Fenske, finished ninth overall, and the Women’s Team, spearheaded senior runner Oluwabukola Pereira, finished sixth on the afternoon.
Men’s and Women’s Tennis
Competing in the Midwestern State Invitational, SBU’s Tennis Teams held their own. The spotlight of the tournament shone on Max Sanoja and Raul Caballero. They lost in the first round of their doubles tournament but bounced back and won the finals of the consolation bracket.
Men’s and Women’s Golf
The Golf Teams were in action on September 17 and 18. The Men’s Team finished nineteenth overall in their tournament held in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Finishing fourth overall in Enid, Oklahoma, the Women’s Team made the statement of the week for the SBU Golf Teams.
Men’s Football
The Bearcats looked to get on the winning ways as they marched into Clinton, Mississippi, to take on the Choctaws of Mississippi College. The game started off well; the Bearcats led 3-0 after the first possession. From that point on, it was all Choctaws. Mississippi College scored the following 34 points in what ended up being a rout of the Bearcats. SBU managed to tack on six points towards the end of the game to make the final score 34-9. The Bearcats now sit at 0-2 on the season and enter Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday, September 22, in Jefferson City, Missouri, against Lincoln University.
