Basketball
It is time for MIAA Conference Tournament action! SBU’s men’s team entered the MIAA Conference Tournament having lost four of their last five regular season games, including an 82-68 loss to Lindenwood University in the final game of the season, to put their record at 13-15 overall. The Bearcats’ fortunes turned around in the MIAA Tournament, however, where they avenged their loss to Lindenwood by defeating the Lions 76-75. The Bearcats advanced to the second round, where they fell short at the hands of the #2-seeded Washburn Ichabods.
On the other hand, the women’s basketball team did not have as eventful of a March as the men’s team. Despite winning four of their last five games, SBU finished 10-18 on the season and tied for the tenth in the MIAA Conference. With SBU on the losing end of the tiebreaker, the Bearcats did not qualify for the MIAA Conference Tournament.
Baseball/Softball
Although SBU’s softball team started the season with a 1-14 record, things appear to be turning around. The Bearcats swept Missouri S&T in a doubleheader on March 7, and now boast a 3-3 record at home this season. The Bearcats will play yet another doubleheader in Bolivar on March 11, against the University of Illinois Springfield.
On the men’s side of the baseball diamond, SBU has run into a roadblock in MIAA Conference play. Coming off of a three-game set against Northwest Missouri State University, the Bearcats lost each game by one run and have dropped to 3-6 in Conference play and 8-10 overall.
Tennis
Both SBU tennis teams are riding winning streaks, but both teams are also entering their toughest stretch of the season.
The men’s team, which now sits at 6-0 on the season, have dominated in their six matches. Winning by a 38-4 combined score, the men’s team looks to improve upon it high level of play as it enters a tournament in San Antonio, Texas. This tournament has the Bearcats going toe-to-toe with Hawaii Pacific University and the University of Hawaii at Hilo, who are ranked 15 and 10, respectively.
The women’s team is also entering the tournament in San Antonio. The final match of the draw features the Bearcats facing the #2 team in the country, the University of West Florida. After this match, the Bearcats will play three straight games against top-15 teams in the country.
