Southwest Baptist University’s sports season commenced on August 24, 2018, with a pair of Women’s Volleyball matches in Stephenville, Texas. Since that time, SBU’s Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams, and Men’s Football Team have all kicked off their seasons. Here is a breakdown of how the Bearcats have fared so far:
Women’s Volleyball
Despite dropping their first seven matches on the young season by a combined score of 1-21, the Bearcats have won their last two matches. Led by junior Makenzie Bouse (pictured #24, front row, second to the left) and her 71 assists in the two victories, the Bearcats improved their record to 2-7 on the season.
Women’s Soccer
The Women’s Soccer season did not start the way the Bearcats were hoping. Dropping their first two matches of the year without scoring a goal, the Bearcats pulled a tie out of the matchup with Northwestern OSU on Thursday, September 6. Sophomore Raegan Edwards (pictured #4, second row, far left) scored the first goal of the season for SBU.
Men’s Soccer
SBU’s Men’s Soccer Team started slightly worse than their female counterparts. The men also lost their first two matches, but they scored a singular goal in their second match of the year. Freshman forward Isaiah Waddy holds this honor of being the first player to score a goal for the men’s SBU soccer team in 2018.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
Both SBU Cross Country Teams participated in their first meets of the season at the 2018 Bearcat Invitational on Saturday, September 1. The Men’s Cross Country Team finished third overall on the afternoon, and the Women’s Team finished first out of the nine schools that entered.
Men’s Football
Looking to bounce back from their disappointing 2017 campaign, which featured the Bearcats going 5-5, SBU took the field for the first time in the 2018 season. Their opponent, Houston Baptist, is in the FCS division and was the favorite heading into the matchup. The visiting Bearcats, trampled by the Huskies, lost the game 49-7.
