WALDREP TO GIVE POETRY READING AT SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Barnett-Padgett Literary Artist Series of Southwest Baptist University will be presenting “poet extraordinaire” G.C. Waldrep in a reading of his work at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Davis-Newport Theatre of the Jester Learning & Performance Center on the Bolivar campus.

A recent collection of Waldrep’s poetry, “feast gently,” was released this year by Tupelo Press. Waldrep also has authored and edited many collections of poems. He has received numerous honors, including two Pushcart Prizes, recognitions and fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the North Carolina Arts Council, the Lannan foundation, and awards from the Poetry Society of America and the Academy of American Poets.

Born in South Boston, Va., Waldrep earned his bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University, then his M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University, and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. He left academia in 1996 to join the New Order Amish Community, then later returned as a visiting professor. He currently is a professor of English at Bucknell University and is a member of the Old Order River Brethren.

The reading, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a book signing.
