Southwest Baptist University News Release Contact: Charlotte Marsch, Director of Marketing and Communications (417) 328-1803 / cmarsch@SBUniv.edu SBU Wind Symphony to present “A Potpourri of Wind Music” on Oct. 3 BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist University Department of Music will present “A Potpourri of Wind Music” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus. The SBU Wind Symphony, along with compositions performed by woodwind, brass and percussion chamber groups, will feature works by Boysen, Ticheli, Barber, Schuman and Persichetti. The Wind Symphony music for this performance depicts a variety of styles and emotions. Frank Ticheli’s “Sun Dance” suggests the image of “a town festival on a warm, sun-washed day,” and features elementary education major Daphne Langford on oboe. “Serenade No. 11,” composed by Vincent Persichetti in 1960, is his fifth work for wind band. One of the cornerstones of the wind band repertoire, “Chester,” is the third movement of “New England Triptych: Three Pieces after William Billings,” composed by William Schuman in 1956. Three talented SBU students will be featured in Andrew Boysen’s “Song for Lyndsay” – a love song that he wrote for his wife. Music education major Hannah Mountz (French horn), along with psychology major Emma Hale (flute) perform as soloists and in a brief duet during the work. Freshman computer science major Zach Wallgren is the featured pianist. Also on the program, which is free and open to the public, is Samuel Barber’s only published work for wind band. “Commando March” will feature senior music education major Cameron Collins on euphonium. For more information, contact Dr. Brian Hopwood in the department of music at (417) 328-1647 or bhopwood@SBUniv.edu.
