Clinton, MS - The Bearcat Football Team fell to Mississippi College Saturday evening 34-9. With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 0-2 (0-0 GLVC) on the year.
Southwest Baptist began the game with a 5:14 drive that put the first points on the board with a 36 yard field goal from Alec Gathright. The Choctaws answered quickly with a 36 yard touchdown run, making the game 7-3 in favor of Mississippi College. To close out the second half, the Choctaws scored 10 points late in the second quarter, taking a 17-3 lead into halftime.
The Bearcat defense held Mississippi College to a field goal on the opening drive of the half, but couldn't get anything going on offense. The Choctaws would score another touchdown before the end of the third, giving a 27-3 lead to the opponent. SBU started the fourth quarter with a solid drive, completing 5 first downs and taking the ball all the way to the Mississippi College 8 yard line. Due to a penalty and loss of yardage, the Bearcats were forced to go for it on 4th and goal from the 18 yard line and couldn't convert. The highlight of the drive was a Bryse Salik 29 yard run on second down.
After the Choctaws scored another touchdown, the Bearcats answered with a scoring drive of their own. The drive started with a 20 yard connection from Bryse Salik to Nicos Oropeza. Salik would find Oropeza twice more on the drive, and found Connor Ratcliff in the end zone for a 14 yard touchdown. After a missed PAT, SBU cut the score down to 34-9. Mississippi College would run the clock out from there, creating a final score of 34-9 in favor of the Choctaws.
Bryse Salik finished 12 for 19, 114 yards and a touchdown, also picking up 38 yards with his feet. Mario Lanier caught 4 passes for 72 yards on the night. Defensively, Tyler Curts picked up 14 tackles, 10 solo and Connor Hicks collected 8 tackles, 6 solo.
Next Saturday is an off week for the Bearcats, but they resume play on September 22 at 6 PM, opening GLVC play at Lincoln.
