A cool breeze, the smell of coffee, and the tension of an eager crowd; this was the setting for the spoken word performance by Sophia Marsh at The Well 4:14 on Tuesday, May 1. Sophia Marsh is a fourth year theatre student at Southwest Baptist University with a passion for language. When asked about why she chooses spoken word as her outlet, her response was “…I love performing and sharing my thoughts and feelings about the world with other people and hearing what they have to say. It’s a great conversation starter and helps you get to know other people!” Marsh’s performance was a collection of poems she has written throughout the years and covered a variety of topics. Even though each piece was unique, a common point made in each of them was the importance of self-worth and the issues caused by depression. Whether the poem was a heartbreaking dedication to her younger self or a humorous review of reality television, it would eventually turn into something memorable and inspiring. Marsh’s pieces were consistently followed by the gentle snaps of an audience member relating to her impactful words or the loud claps and cheers of an audience empowered. Male and female listeners alike said that it felt like she was saying what they themselves only said in their hearts. A few audience members even confessed to shedding a few tears. Marsh humbly accepted these praises with bashful smiles and warm humor. All in all, the event was seemingly well received with crowd members looking forward to future performances.
