With the top two picks in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings select DeAndre Ayton and Marvin Bagley III, respectively. These two dominant big men are considered to be the two best players in the 2018 draft, so the moves came as no surprise.
The real surprise of the night came with the third pick. The Atlanta Hawks trade picks with the Dallas Mavericks, who own the fifth pick, and receive Wesley Matthews and a future first-round pick from the Mavs. In exchange, Dallas receives Kent Bazemore and Luka Dončić, who the Hawks selected at number three overall.
After Jaren Jackson Jr. was taken by the Memphis Grizzlies fourth overall, the excitement built to see who the Mavericks would select for the Hawks. Since the trade had already been announced, everyone in attendance knew the pick was headed to Atlanta.
This mystery pick turned out to be none other than Trae Young. The hot-shooting, dime-dropping freshman from Oklahoma heads to Atlanta, where he will campaign for the starting point guard position.
Young’s selection rounds out the top five picks of the 2018 Draft, which is considered to be one of the most star-studded Drafts in recent years.
