Short Story | Major Decision

By Thomas Schaal

“You can always change," but not without cost.

Together they stand atop a glistening tower seemingly light-years above the end of their lives. Each wields a different weapon, one with lead another with ink. Some with rulers and yet others with drinks. Regardless of such, none escape the powerful push reality deals them and are left powerless to descend into the unknown.

Plummeting through this void, some are quick to notice a multitude of gleaming ropes while others continue to plummet at breathtaking velocities. Each lifeline looks vastly different from the others, some come complete with sturdy knots and rough handles while others have adequate strength but can be ascended with ease. Yet, thrown into disarray as they were, chaos is quick to infect the would be students. One by one, it forces them to fling themselves towards any rope that looks mildly appealing but keeps them from first looking through its flaws.

So here they’re placed, luck and circumstances deciding their fate. Many find themselves trapped on but a string, knowing full well a jump to another line could lead to free-fall. Others, however, smile at the cables they’ve been fastened to, safe and secure for their upward ascent towards graduation. Whatever the placement, whatever the choice, the climb is a long one that many give up. But for those whose resolve remains firm, who refuse to let go and be among the fallen, a crown is reserved for them that no one will ever be able to take away.
