Short Story | Intertwining Souls

By Justice Westmoreland

Love. An intangible mass built upon promises kept, phone calls until dawn stretches the morning sky, warm arms that make you feel secure in their embrace, slow kisses that promise forever, and a heart that you can call home. Love. An infinite sense of belonging to someone, the liveliness of a quiet moment and peace in the turmoil.

The morning dew clung to the blades of grass as the sun rose, displaying an array of alluring colors. The spring air kissed our skin with a cool, crisp breeze, rustling the leaves in the trees surrounding us. The birds sang vibrant melodies alongside our path as if they were joining us along our venture. Teagan and I strolled along the edge of the waterfront, embedding our footprints in the sand with every step we took. As we came to an abrupt stop, he took my hands in his, intertwining our fingers and kneeling to the ground on his right knee. He pulled a slender box from his pocket, revealing a ring with diamonds beautifully aligned along the edges of an opal stone. “Justice,” he began, his voice trembling, “being with you has been a continuous joy. The time that we have shared has made me realize that you complete me in every possible way. Without you, I am not whole. Your love is the purpose of my life and I wish to share every moment of that with you. I love you.” His eyes met mine with a passionate glance as the words, “Will you marry me?” escaped his breath. My heart leapt in my chest, startled by the life-altering question presenting itself before me. I was immediately taken back to the exact moment I fell in love with Teagan.

The midnight breeze lingered on our skin as the warm summer night captivated our very essence. Ocean waves crashed vigorously against the shore, filling the air with a salty aroma. Stars trickled across the moonlit sky as we danced slowly to the harmonious symphony in the distance. It felt as though we were leaves in the wind, carelessly drifting into the night with no destination in mind. His eyes were painted a vibrant blue, colored with awe and curiosity. His warm embrace embodied the comfort of home while providing a gentle sense of security. My heart yearned for his love in the most demanding form, thumping violently in my chest as his eyes met mine, pounding wildly as his lips brushed mine, begging for reassurance that his heart craved me too.

As I became one with time again, my soul filled with great admiration for the man kneeling before me. Joyous tears rushed along my flustering cheeks as I managed the words, “I would love to marry you!” His lips curled into an unwavering smile as he swept me into his arms. Our bodies drifted to the sound of the current splashing against the oceanside. In that very moment, it was as if our souls intertwined and we became one.
