Poem | Put Down The Lyrics

By Breanna Prater

11 April 2019

Why are there so many love songs?

The stories they tell are as unhealthy as they are beautiful,

And the ending never bodes well.

Yet,

The masses delve into their depths with glee

And come out with despair.

Society paints a picture,

An elegant Van Gogh,

And then places it on a pedestal as the goal.

While simultaneously forgetting,

The painful, unhealthy reality

That Van Gogh lived.

Because behind all of those portraits,

And the mysterious lady,

There was rarely joy.

We are taught to memorialize the beauty,

And forget reality,

Because honesty has equal parts beauty and pain.

Society teaches children this from the beginning,

With love songs and fairytales,

Because everyone should have a happy ending.

But the very notion of a happy ending is impossible,

Because life does not end after the wedding -

That is when life with love finds its beginning.

And life,

Tells a different story -

One, without perfection.

Because Romeo and Juliet,

Are a tragedy!

Not a goal worthy love story

And all of those love songs,

Well,

They emphasize the honeymoon state and nothing more.

Reality,

Carries thousands of different harmonies,

And putting the lyrics down opens doors

There is only one more thing to do,

Ask yourself the question:

Are you willing to take the risk?

Because if our paths ever cross

I want you to know,

I am.
