May 9, 2018

Color Zumba, hosted by the University Activities Council (UAC), was this past Tuesday, May 8, on the Forum. The theme was “You’re one in a melon,” characterized by the pink and green color dust and free watermelon for all participants. There was even free t-shirts for the first 75 people who showed up! It was a great time to dance, let off some steam, and have a fun workout before finals start up next week.

Zumba is a free fitness class incorporating dance inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and music offered in the Wellness Center for students and members. It is offered throughout the year at the Wellness Center on Mondays at 8:00-8:45 P.M., Tuesdays at 7:30-8:15 P.M., Wednesdays at 8:00-8:45 A.M., and Thursdays at 4:00-4:45 P.M. The UAC, however, took a unique spin on Zumba and added a similar style to a Color Run to create Color Zumba. Incorporating color powder and Zumba helped take Zumba outside of the gym and make it a more exhilarating experience.

More than 80 students showed up to Color Zumba making it a colorful and fun experience. The workouts/dances were easy to follow along with and enough to make one break a sweat. The environment was non-judgmental, which was encouraging to people who may not be dancers at heart. The event was inviting to everyone regardless of their skill level. At one point, the entire group threw up their color powder making somewhat of a rainbow cloud. The color powder is not permanent and can be easily washed off of clothes and skin.

The Color Zumba event was a vibrant, multicolored way to break a sweat and have fun with friends during the last few weeks of spring semester. Next time you hear about Color Zumba, be sure to try it out and see what all the talk is about or try going to an actual Zumba class at one of the times listed above. You will not be disappointed if you try!
